"Rugby clubs grow like crustaceans, starting with a chunk of rock knocked off a distant club then swept across the oceans and dropped into an appropriate environment. They cling to the new soil, they cluster together and you have a transplanted tradition, full of pride and vigor."
Texas Rugby began when Her Majesty's frigate the H.M.S. Burnside arrived in port at Galveston, in 1967. A few lads from the officer's mess were lounging around a sleazy bar along the docks when they spied three squeaky clean medical students from Baylor Medical doing research for their term paper. The navies challenged the toffs to a game of "rugby" and the rest, as they say "is history."
